Selles fantastilises romantilises komöödias leiavad pikalt abielus olnud Joan (Elizabeth Olsen) ja Larry (Miles Teller) end pärast surma Ristmikult – kohast, kus teistpoolsusesse saabunud peavad otsustama kellega nad igaviku koos veedavad. Kui Larry jaoks tundub see otsus lihtne, siis Joan avastab, et ligi pool sajandit on teda seal ees oodanud ka tema esimene, noorelt sõjas surnud abikaasa Luke (Callum Turner). Selle uue maailma taga on Läti imelaps Gints Zilbalodis, kes pole ainuüksi filmi lavastaja, vaid ka peakunstnik ja muusika ning stsenaariumi kaasautor. Pärast hiilgavat soolodebüüti „Koduteel“ toob Zilbalodis ekraanile julge ja inimliku kassi, kes on müstilisel otsirännakul. Pärast katastroofilist üleujutust tuleb kassil üksinda päästa hüljatud postapokalüptilisest džunglist rühm naiivseid leemureid, laisk kapibaara, ulakad kured, majesteetlik mõõkvaal ja täiesti ebausaldusväärne labrador.

Kuri nõid paneb noore Sophie peale needuse, mis muudab ta vanaks naiseks. Kuna Sophie ei saa sedasi oma senist tööd oma ema kübarapoes jätakta ega ka needusest kellelegi rääkida, läheb ta kurikuulsa võlur Howli likuvasse kindlusesse ja saab seal tööd. Seal sõbruneb ta tuledeemon Calciferiga, kes annab lossile energiat ja on Howliga seotud lepingu kaudu, mida ta ei saa avaldada. Nad lubavad üksteist aidata. Sophie aitab Howlil astuda tema endise õpetaja, Sulimeni vastu, kuid peab samas ka aitama Calciferi vabaneda lepingust, kuna see saaks siis talle tema nooruse tagasi anda.

"Lumivalgeke" on muusikaline mängufilmiversioon Walt Disney poolt 1937. aastal loodud igihaljast klassikatükist "Lumivalgeke ja seitse pöialpoissi".
