Filmi tegevustik toimub Ameerika lõunaosariikides, kaks aastat enne kodusõja algust. Oscari-võitja Jamie Foxx kehastab orja Djangot, kelle karm minevik eelmise omaniku omanduses viib ta kokku sakslasest pearahaküti dr King Schultziga (Oscari-võitja Christoph Waltz).
