Kuri nõid paneb noore Sophie peale needuse, mis muudab ta vanaks naiseks. Kuna Sophie ei saa sedasi oma senist tööd oma ema kübarapoes jätakta ega ka needusest kellelegi rääkida, läheb ta kurikuulsa võlur Howli likuvasse kindlusesse ja saab seal tööd. Seal sõbruneb ta tuledeemon Calciferiga, kes annab lossile energiat ja on Howliga seotud lepingu kaudu, mida ta ei saa avaldada. Nad lubavad üksteist aidata.
