Bond (Pierce Brosnan), relvastatud tapmisloaga, sõidab Venemaale, et üles otsida "Kuldsilm", võimsa kosmoserelva käivitaja, mis suudab maa suunas lasta hirmuäratava elektromagneetilise kiire, mis hävitab kõik, mis teele ette jääb. Loo lahendamisel on nende ainsaks niidiotsaks allveelaevade liikumist kajastav mikrofilm - kuid seegi osutub võltsituks.

Briti salaluure agent James Bond (Timothy Dalton) aitab vene salaagendil Georgi Koskov'il (Jeroen Krabbé) läände põgeneda, kuid Koskov röövitakse seal enda peamisest peidupaigast.
