Janez Puhar's Missing Formula

Janez Puhar's Missing Formula 2000

1

The documentary entitled 'Janez Puhar's Lost Formula' introduces the Slovenian inventor of glass-plate photography from the point of view of a foreign observer, that of Scotsman Robin Crichton, who wonders how and why we honour him, since he is virtually unknown in the Western world. Robin decides to single-handedly look into these Slovenian beliefs. Puhar claims that for the light-sensitive matter he used mercury, sulfur, iodine and possibly varnish, which he applied in the end to protect the emulsion. But his real formula has never been brought to light anywhere. Indeed, the whole world knows that no one has used Puhar's ingredients to make photographs, because the said three elements are not sensitive to light - neither separately nor together as a compound. Robin therefore arrives at the key question: are the four Puhar originals, which currently exist around the world, real or are they just a mistake made by Slovenian historians and museum specialists?

There were times when the economy was thriving and all indicators were turned upwards. But then finances crashed and reality hit – the economy had been on steroids. While professionals argue whether the financial crisis runs in the form of V or in the form W or has become a line segment at the bottom of the graph, we are wondering: "How could this have happened?!" Some answers can be found in To The Top And Back. Featuring Albin Kordež, a financier, a former president of the board, manager of the year, a member of the Bank of Slovenia governing board, the mastermind of management buyout, a "tycoon", a convict residing in the semi-open unit of the Dob Prison.

Newsreel 242 - Sunny Railways 2023

In Yugoslavia in 1947, 211,000 of the country's young people, joined by 5,735 from abroad, worked with great enthusiasm building the 242 kilometer railroad between Sarajevo and Samac. A newsreel from the period shows them toiling away with spades, pickaxes and shovels to complete the job in just seven months. Newsreel 242-Sunny Railways is both a tribute to these idealistic young people and an elegy for the loss of hope for a better world. "The visions of the future suffocated in the rivers of blood and mass graves," we hear in voice-over, referring to the bloody breakup of Yugoslavia and to a broader context. The railroad, laid over the rubble of the Second World War, damaged during the Bosnian War, and neglected in the new millennium now looks like the ruins of some ancient civilization. This documentary essay argues that the story of the railroad harbors enduring ideas for a world beyond capitalism, and that we must rediscover the values of times past.

The narrative film is about a central character looking for the source of his problems. He feels a terrible need for the culprit, for all the bad things in his life, because he himself is certainly not responsible for it. In search of an opponent, he delves into his family, society, and world leadership. When he does not find a good reason for his troubles in all this, he delves into nature and God. He finds no reason for his anger, the hypocriticalness of the central character escalates. In the end, we find that the source of all the bad is his own inner voice. The highlight of the film is a confrontation with oneself.
