داستان یک غارتگر که از قبیله خود طرد می‌شود و در سفر خود به‌دنبال یک رقیب شایست، همراه و متحدی غیرقابل انتظار پیدا می‌کند.

جیک سالی سرباز فلج نیروی دریایی به ماموریتی در پاندورا، قمر یکی از سیارات دوردست میرود. او در میابد که که انسان‌ها قصد دارند موجودات شبه انسان پاندورا بنام «ناوی» را نابود کنند تا منابع با ارزش آن‌ها که در جنگل‌هایشان نهفته است، را بدست آورند. جیک با یک هویت «آواتار» به داخل مردم ناوی نفوذ می کند، و از طرفی هم به سرهنگ کوارتیچ قول می دهد با ارتش همکاری کند. جیک خیلی سریع با مردم ناوی خو می گیرد و عاشق دختر رئیس قبیله آن‌ها می شود. طولی نمی کشد که سرهنگ و افرادش با تاکتیک‌هایی مرگبار به مردم ناوی حمله می کنند، و جیک تصمیم می گیرد با آن‌ها مقابله کند.
