کنای، اسکیمویی شکارچی است که به همراه دو برادرش سیتکا و دیناهی زندگی می‌کند. او به سن بلوغ نزدیک می‌شود و طبق رسوم قبیله ارواح نشان مقدسی را برای او در نظر می‌گیرند که سرمشق او برای ادامه زندگی باشد. نشانی که توسط جادوگر قبیله به او داده می‌شود. در حالی که کنای منتظر نشان شجاعت یا چیزی شبیه آن است نشان خرس که نشانه عشق است به او داده می‌شود. کنای که از این موضوع ناراحت است وقتی دزدیده شدن غذاهای دیناهی توسط خرس را می‌بیند به دنبال خرس می‌رود و برادرانش هم به دنبال او می‌روند آن‌ها با خرس درگیر می‌شوند و سیتکا برادر بزرگتر برای نجات آن دو خود را فدا می‌کند و کشته می‌شود. کنای برای انتقام به دنبال خرس می‌رود و خرس را می‌کشد ولی توسط یک جادو از طرف ارواح به خرس، حیوانی که او از آن بسیار متنفر بود، تبدیل می‌شود. اکنون برای نجات از این شرایط باید کارهایی بکند که داستان این کارتون را رقم خواهد زد…

در 12 آگوست 1967، در پارک ملی گلاسیر مونتانا، اتفاق غیرقابل تصوری رخ داد: در همان شب، با فاصله 9 مایلی از هم، حمله خرس گریزلی نه یک، بلکه دو کشنده رخ داد.
