فیلم "چشمان کاملا بسته" آخرین اثر کوبریک پیش از مرگ وی بود. که بسیاری از منتقدین این فیلم را شاهکار کوبریک معرفی می کنند. فیلمنامه این فیلم بر اساس رمان "ترامنول" Traumnovelle ("داستان خیال") اثر "آرتور اِشنیتزِر" نوشته شده است. "نیکول کیدمن" و "تام کروز" بازیگر های اصلی آن هستند و در زمان ساخت فیلم هنوز طلاق نگرفته بودند. کوبریک تنها بعد از اولین روایت ویرایش فیلم مرد و از اونجایی که کوبریک مردیست که از تکرار و کار زیاد کار عالی می سازه ، تمام منتقدین اتفاق نظر دارند که قطعا او پیش ازمرگش تغییرات چشم گیری در فیلم میداد. اما با تمام این نقد ها فیلم بدون هیچ دستخوشی منتشر شد و نظر کمپانی برادارن وارنر این بود که به کار کوبریک نباید دست زد.

یک جراح با استعداد اما متکبر و مغرور که پس از حادثه ای ناگوار شغلش را از دست می‌دهد، راه تازه‌ای را پیش روی زندگی‌اش می‌بیند. او توسط یک جادوگر آموزش‌هایی را فرا میگیرد تا از دنیا در برابر افراد شرور محافظت کند.

داستان این فیلم براساس رمانی به همین نام و با الهام از داستان فرانکنشتاین نوشته شده است و روایت‌گر زنی جوان به نام بلا بکستر است که توسط دانشمندی مستعد و به نوعی عجیب و غیر معمول از مرگ به زندگی بازمی‌گردد. بلا بکستر تحت محافظت این دانشمند، مشتاق يادگيری و تشنه دنیادیدگی است و کمبود آن‌را درون خود احساس می‌کند. به دنبال همین حس، روزی او به همراه وکیلی فاسد و جذاب فرار و ماجراجویی‌ای را آغاز می‌کند.
