شیکاگو، سال ۲۰۳۵. روبات ها در همه جا به عنوان کارگر یا پیشخدمت به کار گرفته شده اند. در حالی که به سه قانون روباتی پای بند هستند که ظاهرا باعث می شود به آدم ها لطمه ای نزنند. تا این که کارآگاه ویژه ی جنایی به نام «دل اسپونز» (اسمیت) به شدت به روبات ها شک می کند و سرانجام رودرروی روباتی به نام «سانی» می شود که تکامل پیدا کرده و به ضوابط «سه قانون روباتی» پای بند نیست...
