یک استاد دانشگاه در لحظه‌ای سرنوشت‌ساز هم در زندگی شخصی و هم در حرفه خود قرار می‌گیرد؛ زمانی که شاگرد ممتازی اتهامی علیه یکی از همکارانش مطرح می‌کند و رازی تاریک از گذشته‌ی او در شرف افشا شدن است.

داستان فیلم مربوط به ماجرای واقعی سقوط هواپیمایی در ژوئیه ۲۰۰۲ و اتفاقاتی است که طی ۴۷۸ روز بعد از آن رخ داد. فیلم داستان مردی به نام رومان ملنیک را به تصویر می‌کشد که همسر و فرزندش در سانحه هوایی کشته شده‌اند. مقصر این امر اشتباه مسئول برج مراقبت جیکوب بونانوس بوده‌است. پلیس این شخص را تحت مراقبت قرار می‌دهد ولی رومان به این سادگی دست بردار نیست و در پی انتقام است.

روزى « یوزف ك » ( پركینز )، كارمند بانك، را بازرس پلیس ( فوا ) و دو دستیارش ( كرنز و هان ) دستگیر مى‏كنند. او مرتكب جرمى نشده و از اتهامش نیز اطلاعى ندارد...
