داستان فیلم در مورد اعضای بیکار خانواده‌ی بی‌پولی است که به یک خانواده‌ی ثروتمند تعدی می‌کنند اما در مخمصه می‌افتند.

«مارتی مک‌فلای» 17 ساله است و با دانشمندی به نام «اِمت براون» آشنا می‌شود. این دانشمند در حال ساخت ماشین زمان است و قصد دارد آن را مورد آزمایش قرار دهد. این دو در لحظه‌ی امتحان ماشین زمان، مورد حمله‌ی یک گروه تروریستی قرار می‌گیرند و «مارتی» که سعی می‌کند از دست آنها فرار کند، به 30 سال قبل برمی‌گردد.

وقتی در دهه 1920 در سرزمین ملت سرخ پوست اوسیج در اوکلاهما نفت کشف می شود، مردم اوسیج یکی یکی کشته می شوند؛ تا اینکه اف بی آی وارد ماجرا می شود تا پرده از این معما بردارد.
