وقتی دانیل پلانیو اطلاع پیدا می کند که در شهر کوچکی در غرب، دریایی از نفت در حال تراوش از زمین است، فوری دست پسرش را می گیرد و به آنجا می رود تا شانسش را در گرد و خاک بوستن امتحان کند. دنیل که از کودکی تجربههای بدی با زندگی و انسانها داشته، رفته رفته از نوع بشر تنفر پیدا کرده و قصد دارد با به دست آوردن ثروتی کلان زندگیای ترتیب دهد تا دیگر به نوع بشر و تعامل با آن نیازی نداشته باشد. با وجود این طرز فکر، او به پسرخواندهای که دست تقدیر بر سر راهش قرار داده و دنیل ابتدا از او در جهت دروغ خانوادهدار بودن و برای تسهیل مذاکرات تجاریاش استفاده میکند دل میبندد. این پسرخوانده ناسپاس از آب در میآید و دنیل در تجربهٔ دیگری با شخصی روبرو میشود که خود را به دروغ، برادر گمشدهای از او معرفی میکند. این بار هم دنیل به نوع بشر شانس دیگری میدهد و به این “برادر” دل میبندد. بعداً او متوجه این دروغ نیز میشود و وی را میکشد. هر تجربه بد او را خشنتر میکند تا جایی که دیگر از رنجاندن فجیع ناسپاسان و کشتن ریاکارانی که به سراغش میآیند ابایی ندارد و فیلم پایان خونینی دارد…
