داستان «جوکر» در دهه‌ی ۱۹۸۰ میلادی روی می‌دهد و زندگی «آرتور فلک» استند-آپ کمدین شکست‌خورده‌ای را روایت می‌کند که با طرد شدن از سوی جامعه به دنیای زیرزمینی جنایت‌ در شهر گاتهام گرایش پیدا می‌کند.

"لوئیس بلوم"، جوان پر تلاش و با انگیزه‌ای هست که در پی یافتن یک شغل با بازار داغ خبرنگاری جنایی لس آنجلس آشنا میشود و گروهی از فیلمبردان آزاد را پیدا میکند که از تصادفات، قتل ها، ضرب و شتم ها و... فیلمبرداری میکنند. لوئیس دست به کار میشود و وارد این جامعه‌ی خشن و بی رحم میشود که در آن هر آژیر پلیس میتواند به معنی پول باد آورده‌ای باشد که با فیلمبرداری از صحنه بدست میاد و...

پاتريک بتمن يک جوان 26 ساله خوش قيافه، با هوش اما روانی و عاشق آدمکشی است. دلايل وی برای قتل عبارتند از حسادت بی پايان، عقده های روحی و مادی، تنفر و يا هيچ دليلی مگر جنون کامل. جنون او در طول اين فيلم افزايش می يابد و دست کم 20 نفر را بقتل می رساند از جمله همکاران، دوستانش و هر کسی ديگری که سر راه او قرار بگيرد يا اينکه مورد حسادت يا غضب او قرار بگيرد. تنها فردی که بنظر می رسد با او همدردی می کند منشی او جين است. در اکثر اوقات پاتريک نمی تواند بگويد که اين اتفاقات واقعی اند يا بخشی از يک لذت روانی هستند...

گروهی از نوجوانان ظاهراً آشنا، خود را تحت تعقیب قاتلی نقاب‌دار می‌یابند که بیش از حد آشنا به نظر می‌رسد! با افزایش تعداد قربانیان و شدت گرفتن لحظات خنده‌دار، هیچ یک از فیلم‌های ترسناک محبوب شما از هجو تیز و برنده این نقیضه فوق‌العاده خنده‌دار در امان نمی‌ماند!

کوبریک این فیلم را بعد از تبعید خودخواسته به انگلستان، در سال 1971 می سازد. اما ساختار فیلم آنقدر بی پرده به بیان مفاهیم آن پرداخته بود، که ناگزیر مدتی فیلم توقیف بود(حدود 11 سال) تا شاید تمدن کمی جلوتر برود و مردم بزرگتر شوند و بتوانند چنین فیلمهایی را هم ببینند. نویسنده كتاب پرتقال كوكی (انتونی برگس) در زمان تالیف كتاب در مالزی زندگی میكرد. همسر او توسط چهار خلافكار امریكایی مضروب شده بود و این خود قسمتی از مضمون داستان او شد. در زبان مالزیایی كلمه "Orang" بمعنی مرد میباشد (همچنین این كلمه قسمتی از كلمه "Orangutan" كه نمیه دوم "Hutan" بمعنی جنگل می باشد بنابراین نام این فیلم بجای كلمه مسطلح clockwork fruit به جای clockwork man یا مرد كوكی نیز میباشد كه دقیقا آلكس در انتهای داستان به آن تبدیل میشود. نقد این فیلم كار اسانی نمیباشد. حتی بعد از نزدیک به چهل سال این فیلم هنوز به مشكلات جامعه اشاره میكند. تا به حال شاید هزاران صفحه مطلب در مورد این فیلم نوشته شده و واقعا توصیف این فیلم در چند جمله کار سختی است

پس از جدا شدن از جوکر، هارلی کوئین و سه ابرقهرمان دیگر، برای نجات زندگی دختری کوچک تلاش می‌کنند.

شش سارق (با نام‌های مستعار آقای سفید، آقای طلایی، آقای صورتی، آقای نارنجی، آقای آبی و آقای قهوه‌ای) از طرف گنگستری به نام 'جو کپت و پسرش ادی برای سرقت از یک فروشگاه الماس‌فروشی اجیر می‌شوند. هیچگاه صحنهٔ اصلی دزدی نشان داده نمی‌شود و بیننده فقط حوادث پیش و پس از آن را می‌بیند. از بین سارقان، آقای آبی و قهوه‌ای در حین دزدی کشته می‌شوند و آقای نارنجی نیز زخمی می‌شود. آن‌ها متوجه می‌شوند یک نفر آن‌ها را لُو داده است زیرا پلیس‌ها در آنجا کمین کرده بودند. هر کدام از اعضا در پی پیدا کردن کسی است که آن‌ها رو لو داده است.

زن جوانی به نام «کارلی ناریس» (استون) که تازه از همسرش جدا شده، در یکی از مجموعه های مدرن و شیک منهتن به نام «اسلیور» ساکن آپارتمانی می شود که قبلا در اختیار زن جوانی بوده که کشته شده است. «کارلی» با یکی از همسایه ها به نام «هاوکینز» (بالدوین) آشنا می شود. در ساختمان قتل هایی اتفاق می افتد و همسایه ای دیگر به نام «جک» که نویسنده ی داستان های جنایی واقعی است، «کارلی» را متقاعد می کند که «هاوکنیز» قاتل است…
