"اُ دای سو" مرد میان سالی است که در یک روز بارانی ربوده می‌شود و در مکانی به مدت ۱۵ سال زندانی می‌شود. پس از آزاد شدن تصمیم می‌گیرد که دلیل ربوده شدنش را کشف کند و از شخصی که این کار را کرده است انتقام بگیرد و... نام این فیلم در زبان فارسی به اشتباه "پیر پسر" و "پسر پیر" ترجمه شده که عنوان درست آن "رفیق قدیمی" و یا "همکلاسی قدیمی" است.

داستان فیلم در مورد ویل هانتینگ جوان ۲۰ ساله‌ای است که در دانشگاه ام‌آی‌تی سریدار است و نبوغی ذاتی در زمینه ریاضیات دارد اما استعداد خود را باور ندارد. استلا اشکارسگورد بازیگر سوئدی در نقش جرالد لمبیو پروفسور ریاضی دانشگاه ام‌آی‌تی که استعداد ویل هانتینگ را کشف می‌کند، رابین ویلیامز در نقش روان‌شناسی که با ویل هانتینگ گفتگو می‌کند و بن افلک هم در نقش چاکی سالیوان دوست صمیمی ویل هانتینگ در این فیلم بازی می‌کنند. لورنس بندر تهیه‌کننده و سو آرمسترانگ، جاناتان گوردون، باب وینشتین و هاروی وینشتین تهیه‌کنندگان اجرایی فیلم ویل هانتینگ نابغه بوده‌اند. ژان یوس اسکافیر مدیر فیلمبرداری، ملیسا استوارت طراح تولید، جیمز مک‌آتیر کارگردان هنری، یارو دیک طراح صحنه و بئاتریکس آرونا پاستور طراح لباس و کری باردن، بیلی هاپکینز و سوزان اسمیت انتخاب‌کننده بازیگران و تعیین نقش‌های فیلم بوده‌اند.[۲]
