Elokuva kertoo Pariisissa asuvasta Rémy-nimisestä rotasta, joka haluaisi olla kokki. Rémy haluaa kokiksi vaikka hänen perheensä sitä vastustaa ja hän tietää, ettei ravintolamaailmassa rotta ole kovin toivottu vieras. Rémy joutuu seikkailuun ennen kuin hän pääsee laittamaan keitoksiaan Pariisin ravintolamaailman huipulla. Rotat joutuvat aina välillä hankaluuksiin ruoanhimonsa (ja ruoanlaittohimonsa) takia. Hankaluuksista kuitenkin selvitään kekseliäisyydellä ja pienillä huijauksilla.
