Elokuva sijoittuu 1930-luvun Kiinaan, Foshanin pieneen kylään, jossa perheensä kanssa asuu myös taistelutaidoiltaan ylivertainen Ip-Man (Yip Man 1893 –1972). Kylässä taistelulajikouluja on monia, mutta kaikki kyläläiset tietävät, kuka on todellinen mestari. Ip Man ei kuitenkaan ole kiinnostunut oman koulunsa perustamisesta, vaan hän viettää aikansa mieluummin harjoittelemalla ja ystäviensä sekä perheensä kanssa olemalla. Ongelmia on kuitenkin luvassa, kun Japani aloittaa hyökkäyksen Kiinaan vuonna 1937. Japanilaiset tuhoavat Foshanin kylää ja ajavat kiinalaiset köyhyyteen ja kansa näkee nälkää. Japanilaiset sortavat kansaa ja viihdytykseen tarjoavat taistelulajeja osaaville mahdollisuuden taistella japanilaisia vastaan ja voitosta tarjotaan ruokaa. Ip Man ei tällaisesta ole kiinnostunut, mutta kun tapahtumat saavat uuden kulun, muuttaa Ip Man mielensä.
