Hobitti - odottamaton matka -elokuvassa palataan taianomaiseen Keskimaahan, jossa mukavuudenhaluinen Bilbo Reppuli vedetään vasten tahtoaan mukaan huimaan seikkailuun. Kolmetoista rohkeaa kääpiötä, Bilbo ja Gandalf suuntaavat kohti Yksinäistä vuorta, jonka lohikäärme Smaug valloitti kauan sitten vuorta asuttaneilta kääpiöiltä.
