Valkoisten aitojen ja kukkivien ruusupensaiden ympäröimällä onnellisella esikaupunkialueella on musta talo ja sen kuollut nurmikko. Naapurit eivät tiedä, että talossa on suuri salainen piilopaikka. Siellä asuu pienen kätyriarmeijan ympäröimä Gru joka suunnittelee maailmanhistorian suurinta ryöstöä. Gru aikoo varastaa kuun (kyllä, kuun!). Gru iloitsee kaikesta inhottavasta. Aseistautuneena kutistus- ja jäädytyssäteillä sekä maassa ja ilmassa kulkevilla taisteluajopeleillä hän kukistaa kaikki jotka asettuvat tielle. Siihen saakka kunnes hän tapaa kolme pientä orpotyttöä jotka näkevät Grussa jotain mitä kukaan muu ei ole koskaan nähnyt: potentiaalisen isän.
