Priča započinje na Zemlji. Glavni lik Jake Sully, vojnik koji još nije pronašao razlog za što bi se borio, regrutiran je za odlazak na planet Pandora u vrijeme kada je svijet na rubu propasti (gotovo ne postoji niti jedan biljni ili životinjski oblik života, a financijski kolaps je zahvatio sve segmente). Treba zauzeti mjesto svojeg brata koji je poginuo u pokušaju komunikacije s Na'vi vrstom (visoka, mršava i plava bića s dredloksima) koja obitava na planetu Pandora. No, postoje problemi; prvi je to što je Jake invalid (ostao je bez noge tijekom ture kao marinac), a drugi je taj što Na'viji baš i nisu veliki ljubitelji ljudske rase.

Otkad je odlučio trajno prenijeti ljudsku svijest u svoje tijelo Avatara i postati novi vođa naroda Na’vi, Jake Sully živi sa svojom obitelji na Pandori. On i Neytiri su osnovali obitelj i dobili djecu. Kolonizirajuće su se snage vratile na Pandoru kako bi završili prvotnu potragu za rijetkim mineralom, prisiljavajući Jakea i Neytiri da pobjegnu iz svog doma, istražujući do tada nepoznate dijelove Pandore gdje će se upoznati s ljudima Metkayine, klanom domorodaca koji žive okruženi morem.

Nakon što je stotinama godina radio ono za što je napravljen, Wall-E (kratica od Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class) otkriva novu svrhu u svom životu kad upozna istraživačkog robota EVE. Dok se George i dvojica astronauta spase veslajući prema obali, njihova kolegica umire pri spuštanju te se u svojoj kapsuli mumificira u majmunicu. Potom ih napadnu gorile na konjima koji koriste oružje i međusobno razgovaraju na engleskom. Georgea nakon ranjavanja operiraju dvije čimpanze, od kojih je jedna liječnica Zira. Dok se oporavlja, majmuni ga zatvore u kavez s Novom, jednom od onih primitivnih ljudi koji ne znaju govoriti.

Nakon što je u dalekoj budućnosti astronaut Taylor shvatio da je planet majmuna na kojem se našao zapravo Zemlja, na isti se planet spušta nova ljudska letjelica, s posadom koja je pošla u potragu za Taylorom. Međutim, spuštanje svemirske letjelice preživio je samo astronaut Brent, koji susreće Taylorovu družicu Novu i želi od nje saznati što se dogodilo s Taylorom. Međutim, njih dvoje uskoro padnu u majmunsko zarobljeništvo, gdje im znanstvenica Zira, koju je Taylor prethodno iznimno zainteresirao, i njezin suprug Cornelius pokušavaju pomoći. Naposljetku Brent i Nova uspiju pobjeći iz majmunskih uza, te otkriju tajno podzemno područje u kojem čudan religijski kult obožavanja atomske bombe njeguje skupina ljudi telekinetičkih sposobnosti. Naime, genijalni je George već dizajnirao veću verziju spomenutog uređaja kojeg namjerava iskoristiti kako bi putovao u budućnost i nabavio dokaze. No to će mu putovanje donijeti i više nego što je očekivao, opasnost, ljubav i avantura, sve to čeka Georgea u dalekoj budućnosti.

Godina je 2274. sretnici koji su preživjeli holokaust žive u gradu pod kupolom u potpunoj izolaciji od vanjskog svijeta. Zbog pomanjkanja hrane i mjesta za život, svaki stanovnik grada ima ograničen životni vijek. Nakon napunjenih trideset godina građani se moraju dobrovoljno javiti na uništenje. Neki od stanovnika tog savršenog društva se odbijaju pokloniti okrutnim zakonima i spas traže u bijegu izvan grada. Logan 5 (York) je 'Sandman', i njegov je posao da lovi i ubija bjegunce. Kada Logan dođe u posjed čudnog simbola, računalo koje upravlja gradom mu naređuje da se uvuče u "Utočište", glavnu bazu bjegunaca.
