Igrani film, pažljivo konstruisan u obliku triptiha. Sve tri priče bave se odnosima između odrasle dece, njihovih donekle udaljenih roditelja (ili samo jednog) i jednih prema drugima. Svako od tri poglavlja odvija se u sadašnjosti i svako u drugoj zemlji. Radnja priče "Otac" smeštena je na severoistoku SAD, priče "Majka" u Dablinu, Irska, a "Sestra, Brat" u Parizu, Francuska. Film je niz studija likova: tiha, opservacijska i neosuđujuća - komedija, ali isprepletena nitima melanholije.

Pisac Jack Torrance u stvaralačkoj je krizi. Kad dobije ponudu za posao pazikuće u osamljenom hotelu Overlook u planinama Colorada, to mu se učini dobrim rješenjem njegovih problema. Štoviše, postaje sve mrzovoljniji i agresivniji, pogotovo nakon druženja s gospodinom Gradyjem, bivšim pazikućom koji je ubio svoju suprugu i kćeri blizanke.
