Na brod stiže i Deltanka Ilia (Persis Khambatt) koju s Deckerom povezuje romantična prošlost. U međuvremenu im se pridružuje i Spock (Leonard Nimoy), koji nije uspio proći obred Kolinahr te se vraća na Enterprise. Prva nevolja na koju nailaze je velika crvotočina koja ih zamalo uništava. Uskoro stižu do oblaka, ali otkriju da je oblak živo biće po imenu V'ger koje skriva tajnu staru 3 stoljeća...

24. je stoljeće. Na zapovjedni brod Federacije krenula je ratna flotila strašnih Borgova, rase kibernetički promijenjenih ljudi kojima zapovjeda zla kraljica (Alice Krige). Njihov cilj je podrediti sve rase u svemiru, a da bi ga ostavarili moraju se dočepati izuma genijalnoga Zeframa Cochranea (James Cromwell) i njegove pomoćnice Lily (AlfreAlfre Woodard). Zeframov izum omogućuje putovanje kroz vrijeme i svladavanje nemjerljivih međugalaktičkih prostranstava. Novi svemirski brod 'Enterprise E' pod zapovjedništvom kapetana Picarda (Patrick Stewart) dobiva naređenje da se ne miješa u borbu između zlih Borgova i federacijskih brodova. Picard jedini prepoznaje sav užas situacije, jer je već jednom bio u borgovskom zarobljeništvu. Kada vidi da će Federacija izgubiti bitku, prekršava naredbu i uništava protivnike, osim jednog manjeg dijela koji uspijeva pobjeći i stvoriti vremensku distorziju zahvaljujući kojoj se mogu vratiti u prošlost.

23. stoljeće, svemirski brod Enterprise nalazi se na rutinskom zadatku kada admiral James T. Kirk primi hitnu poruku iz svemirskog laboratorija Regula 1. Tajnu napravu zvanu 'Projekt postanak' prisvojio je Kirkov stari neprijatelj Khan, briljantni odmetnik iz 20. stoljeća koji ovu napravu koja predstavlja prijetnju cijelom svemiru kani upotrijebiti u smrtonosnoj igri osvete. Uz pomoć svoje grupe genetski modificiranih superljudi Khan preuzme kontrolu nad jednim federacijskim brodom te krene u potjeru za Enterpriseom, odlučan da ništa ne stane na put njegovu cilju: ubojstvu admirala Kirka… Čak i ako to dovede do općeg uništenja.

Nakon radosnog vjenčanja Williama Rikera i Deanne Troi Picard dobije još jedan razlog za slavlje: Romulanci žele mir, a kapetan će biti izaslanik Federacije. No dok Enterprise putuje prema Romulu, ondje ih očekuje genijalni zlikovac koji skriva pakleni plan uništenja te nezamislivu tajnu koja će Picardu pružiti najstrašniji izazov. Shinzon, remanski klon Picarda, želi ni manje ni više nego pokoriti Romulansko carstvo, potpuno razoriti Zemlju te usmrtiti kapetana Picarda.

Sedamnaest godina kasnije, kapetan najnovijega 'Enterprise'-a oznake D, Jean Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) spašava s razorene istraživačke postaje elaurionskoga astrofizičara Sorana (Malcolma McDowella). Pritom ne zna da je brodolomac zbog kojega je riskirao vlastiti život i život svoje posade zapravo tvorac monstruoznoga plana kojemu je cilj uništiti milijune života. Kapetan ne zna ni da će mu presudnu pomoć pri zaustavljanju zločinca dati njegov davno iščeznuli kolega...

Film se nastavlja tamo gdje je završio prethodni, 'Zvjezdane staze II: Khanov bijes'. Nakon Spockova pogreba, posada se vraća kući. Kod kuće saznaju da će njihov brod Enterprise zbog starosti biti povučen iz uporabe. No uskoro kapetana James T. Kirka (William Shatner) posjeti Spockov otac Sarek (Mark Lenard) i priopći mu da je Spock zapravo živ. Njegovo tijelo zarobljeno je na planetu na kojem je na snazi projekt Genesis, a dušu je prije smrti preselio u um doktora McCoya (DeForest Kelley), koji sad pati od trauma i deziluzioniranosti. Stoga je potrebno McCoya odvesti na Vulkan kako bi se Spock vratio u život, a McCoy opet postao onaj stari. Sada je kapetan Kirk prisiljen ukrasti Enterprise, unatoč zabrani vrhovništva te sa svojom posadom krenuti u spašavanje prijatelja.

It first aired in syndication from September 17, 1987 and ended on May 25, 1991. During its first season, the series was originally part of NBC's Prime Time Begins at 7:30 campaign, in which the network's owned-and-operated stations would run first-run sitcoms in the 7:30-8 pm time slot to counterprogram competing stations' game shows, sitcom reruns and other offerings. Out of This World was rotated with the original series Marblehead Manor and She's the Sheriff, a syndicated revival of the 1983 sitcom We Got It Made, and a television adaptation of the play You Can't Take It With You. NBC ended the experiment after the 1987-88 season due to the low ratings put up by three of the series, with Out of This World being one of the two that was renewed. After its first season the series was largely moved to weekend time slots, where it remained until its cancellation following the fourth season.
