Razmažene odrastanjem u sigurnosti njujorškoga zoološkog vrta, naviknute na redovito hranjenje, brigu i oduševljenost razdraganih posjetitelja, četiri će se životinje, koje pojma nemaju o tome kako život u divljini doista izgleda, nakon svoga bijega u slobodu neugodno iznenaditi. Osjećajni lav Alex (Boris Mirković), živahna zebra Marty (Ozren Grabarić), neurotična žirafa Melman (Drago Utješanović) i drski nilski konj Gloria (Zrinka Cvitešić) najbolji su prijatelji i najveće zvijezde zoološkog vrta, no kada jedan od njih nestane iz svoga kaveza, ostali ga kreću tražiti, a putovanje svih završit će u dalekoj Africi, i to na Madagaskaru.

Svaki pingvin ima jedinstvenu pjesmu koju izvodi svojoj odabranici, no mali Mumble nema lijep glas, ali zato ima nešto što nema niti jedan pingvin – talent za tap ples. I dok njegova majka Norma Jean doživljava sinov hobi slatkim, tata Memphis misli da plesanje nije prikladno za jednog pingvina. Osim toga, roditelji znaju da bez posebnog pjeva pingvin nikada neće sebi naći partnericu i pravu ljubav. Od trenutka kada su se izlegli, Mumble i njegova prijateljica Gloria posebno su vezani jedno za drugo, no Glorija nikako ne uspijeva izaći na kraj s Mumbleovim „skakutanjem“. Glasove slatkim pingvinima posudili su David Vurdelja, Robert Ugrina, Ljubomir Kerekeš i drugi.

Odlučno će krenuti kući u voljeni New York, dok kralj Julien, Maurice i Pingvini kreću u zajedničku avanturu. U ovom nastavku put ih vodi kroz Europu, gdje su pronašli savršeno skrovište: putujući cirkus, koji su uredili u Madagaskar stilu! U trećem nastavku serijala Madagaskar lav Alex, zebra Marty, nilski konj Gloria i žirafa Melman odlučni su vratiti se u The Central Park Zoo u New York Cityju. Jedini način za povratak je da što prije pronađu pingvine. Odlazeći iz Afrike putem skreću i nađu se u Europi loveći pingvine i čimpanze koji su uspjeli opljačkati kockarnicu u Monte Carlu. Uskoro ih otkriva Chantel DuBois kojoj se ne svida što životinje iz zoološkog vrta slobodno jure njenim gradom i uživa u ideji da će uloviti svog prvog lava. Životinje se savršeno skrivaju u bivšem putujućem cirkusu i smišljaju kako bi ga ponovno otvorile i žive stigle u New York.
