Thomas A. Anderson čovjek je koji živi dva života. Po danu je običan kompjuterski programer, a po noći haker po imenu Neo. Neo je uvijek ispitivao stvarnost, no istina je daleko od onog što je zamišljao. Kada se nađe na meti policije, kontaktira ga Morpheus, legendarni haker kojeg vlada smatra teroristom. Morpheus pokaže Neu pravi svijet, pustoš u kojem je većina ljudi zarobljena od strane strojeva koji žive od ljudske tjelesne topline i energije, a njihove mozgove zarobljuju u umjetnoj stvarnosti nazvanoj „The Matrix“.
