Drums of Resistance

Drums of Resistance 2016

1

When ex-Yugoslavia began to fall apart, the Serbian regime banned Kosovar Albanians from participating in public life. Albanian employees across public institutions were fired. Albanian media outlets were closed down. Many elementary and high schools were closed to Albanian students and the entire university system was shut down. During the 1990's in Kosovo, teaching resumed in private apartments, houses and basements stores. This documentary shows how a parallel society and reality was organized. It shows how segregation and apartheid became the norm. Besa Luci and Mathieu Jouffre wrote the script for this challenging film together. In it people are in a relaxed atmosphere: eating, drinking, chatting and revisiting vividly one of the most exciting as well as tragic periods in the history of Kosovo.

When it left, death didn't even close our eyes 2020

When it left, death didn't even close our eyes centers on the testimonies of laborers working in Kosovo’s construction industry. They attest to how this precarious and unregulated labor market has serious human costs to those that have to seek its employment. Speaking of how they are expected to work hours—from 12, 13, 15, even up to 24 hours—and in conditions far beyond prescribed regulations or normal human expectations. One of the primary consequences is a high rate of injury, which then precludes future work in the industry—some workers even admit that they would rather face death than lose the ability to earn a living.

The Five Legged Rabbit

The Five Legged Rabbit 1982

1

This movie is set at the start of World War II, with little shepherds on the green slopes of an Albanian mountain range featured as intrigued, distant observers of the Italian army and their prey, the partisan fighters who are hiding in the homes of the villagers. Even the Albanian police who are supposed to be helping the Italians do not betray the resistance fighters when they see them. The children watch as the hunter and hunted play out their drama below, not understanding that the scenes are more real than their own hunt for the five-legged rabbit that is supposed to be living in these hills. As the tragedies of war mount, the children start to become more involved - at one point they steal the weapons from some drunken Italian soldiers, nearly leading to a disaster on their part. Time and events rapidly unfold, and it soon becomes apparent that their innocence will not last for long because their own existence is threatened in a way they are just beginning to understand.

Director Karamuço ponders the notion of national identity as freezing Kosovars, taped during the recent cold snap, give wildly differing opinions about their country’s controversial blue, white and gold national symbol. Funny and telling, the film brilliantly threads an extraordinary sequence of a teacher explaining the flag to her wide-eyed kindergarten students.
