Understanding Depression

Understanding Depression 2020

1

People who suffer from depression are usually invisible. Society believes that this disease affects the mentally weak, spoiled by life, self-centered and unable to "pull themselves together". When someone around us suffers, we think it will pass because they are simply in a bad mood. Depression does not go away by itself, and the bad mood continues and lasts, often for months or years. How much is human endurance? The film presents 4 stories of the struggle with this extremely serious disease, in which they are repeatedly inscribed: exclusions, helplessness of doctors or suicide attempts.

Change. My Problem is a Problem of a Woman 1979

Ewa Partum’s work entitled Change. My problem is a problem of a woman (1979) is the culmination and the turning point of a process which began with Change in 1974. The latter was an action in which the artist had half of her face aged using make-up and immortalized in a portrait posted in the streets of Warsaw. Up to that point, Partum had used make-up to glamorize herself, signing various words with her lips outlined in red and pressed against paper as she spoke 1. But in Change. My problem is a problem of a woman, Partum had wrinkles, varicose veins, and grey hair applied over half of her body while, reclining on a white podium, she recited passages from the critic Lucy Lippard and the artist VALIE EXPORT.

Teresa Tyszkiewicz's last film is at the same time her only work realized in this medium in France, where the artist emigrated in 1982. The film features a sequence with the pin process and large-format works realized in this technique, as if the artist was making a peculiar declaration: after making ARTA, Tyszkiewicz devotes herself almost entirely to the performative and painstaking pin process.

Welcome to the set of "The Wolf And The Sheep". The role of the Wolf is played by a woman, the role of the Sheep is played by a man who is - gay. These characters, ambiguous in various ways, are forced into an unambiguous film form (symbolising social conventions). Horror is mixed with slapstick comedy and the protagonists struggle like animals in a black-and-white tape cage.

“The Landscape is a film on moving, being held and being placed in places and in between places. There is no explanation on the story behind it. There is no deeper thought or symbolism behind it. Like driving, listening to the music and looking at the landscape. All passes by”. – KG
