Myndin segir frá hinum níu ára gamla Milo, sem, eins og flestir níu ára gamlir strákar, á í stormasömu sambandi við móður sína, Lissu. Hún er stöðugt að krefjast einhvers af honum, eins og að fara út með ruslið, borða grænmetið sitt, taka til, og annarra fáránlegra verkefna. Stundum vildi hann að hún væri bara ekki yfir höfuð á heimilinu. Það breytist þó snarlega þegar Milo verður vitni að því að geimskip lendir fyrir utan húsið og mömmu hans er rænt. The show takes place from 1944 to 2002 and follows the lives of three families: the Crawfords, who seek to cover up the Roswell crash and the existence of aliens; the Keys, who are subject to frequent experimentation by the aliens; and the Clarkes, who sheltered one of the surviving aliens from the crash.
