Þvottabjörninn Rúni reynir að stela ruslmat og nammi frá birninum Víglundi en tekst ekki betur til en svo að maturinn glatast og Víglundur gómar hann. Þá verður Rúni að lofa nokkru ómögulegu, að útvega allan matinn á einni viku. Á sama tíma breytist líf saklausra skógardýra til muna þegar heilu hverfin hafa risið í kringum skóginn þeirra meðan þau lágu í vetrardvala. Í stað trjáa og berjarunna standa nú steypt hús. Dýrin vita ekkert um mennina og taugaveiklaði leiðtoginn þeirra, skjaldbakan Viddi, læðist inn í garðinn við eitt húsið og upplifir hryllinginn: Vatnsúðara, grilláhöld, jeppa og fjallahjól. En Rúni er líka mættur í hverfið. Hann veit að aðeins þar getur hann fundið nógu mikið ruslfæði til að þóknast birninum. Viddi snýr aftur í skóginn og lofar því að fara aldrei framar yfir gerðið en Rúni er ekki á sama máli. Hann veit að hann getur fengið hin dýrin til að hjálpa sér við að safna matnum handa Víglundi.
