Víkingaunglingurinn Hiccup býr á lítilli eyju sem nefnist Berk. Þar eru bardagar við dreka daglegt brauð og á Hiccup að verða aðaldrekabani eyjunnar einn daginn. Hins vegar gengur húmor og hugsunarháttur Hiccups illa ofan í aðra íbúa á eyjunni, og þá sér í lagi foringjann, Stock hinn mikla, en það vill svo til að hann er einnig faðir Hiccups. Þegar Hiccup er sendur í drekaþjálfunartíma með jafnöldrum sínum sér hann hins vegar loks tækifæri til að sanna sig fyrir föður sínum. Hann nær að tjóðra einn dreka, en sér umsvifalaust að það er engin ástæða til að drepa hann og þeir verða fljótt vinir. Í stað þess að verða næsti aðaldrekabani lendir Hiccup því í þeirri erfiðu aðstöðu að þurfa að sanna fyrir blóðheitum félögum sínum að það þurfi ekki að drepa dreka til að lifa af á eyunni, en það á eftir að þurfa mikinn sanfæringarkraft til þess.

Geimfarinn Mark Watney er talinn af og verður strandaglópur á plánetunni Mars eftir að geimskipið The Hermes lendir í fárviðri, en geimfarinn verður að reyna að draga fram lífið á plánetunni einn og yfirgefinn, með lítið af tækjum eða öðrum vistum meðferðis. Markmiðið er að þrauka nógu lengi til að ná að koma skilaboðum til Jarðar, og bíða svo eftir björgun.

Að temja drekann sinn 2 gerist um fimm árum eftir að þeir Hiksti og Tannlaus sameinuðu víkingana og drekana svo úr varð órjúfanlegur vinskapur á milli þeirra. Nú skemmta þau Ástríður, Hornasi og öll hin sér daglangt í drekakappflugi, nýjasta æðinu á litlu eyjunni Birkey þar sem víkingarnir eiga heima, á meðan Hiksti og Tannlaus hafa mest gaman af því að fljúga um ókunnar lendur og skoða ný svæði. Í einum slíkum leiðangrinum finna þeir félagar íshelli þar sem hundruð villtra dreka eiga heima. En ævintýrið verður alvarlegt þegar nýr óvinur skýtur upp kollinum sem ógnar tilveru bæði dreka og manna. Til að vinna bug á hættunni þurfa þeir Hiksti og Tannlaus að standa saman sem aldrei fyrr enda er hinn nýi óvinur þeirra stórhættulegur.

Robert De Niro leikur aðalhlutverkið í myndinni, hlutverk Ben Whittaker, 70 ára gamals ekkils, en lífið eftir að hann hætti að vinna og missti eiginkonuna er ekki eins og hann hefði óskað að það væri. Ekkert virðist fylla upp í tómið, þannig að Ben, sem ávallt var snjall í viðskiptum, ákveður að koma aftur inn á markaðinn sem lærlingur. Sú barátta snýst síðan upp í kapphlaup um að finna á ný „Hið horfna land“ þar sem drekar eru óhultir fyrir mönnum. Sagan gerist um ári eftir atburðina í mynd númer tvö og Hiksti hefur ásamt sínu fólki unnið hörðum höndum við að skapa hinn fullkomna stað á Jörðu, borgríkið Berk, þar sem menn og drekar lifa saman í sátt og samlyndi. Hann gerði hins vegar ekki ráð fyrir komu hins öfluga Grimmels sem hótar honum og hans fólki öllu illu láti hann Tannlausa ekki af hendi. Það kemur að sjálfsögðu ekki til greina.
