Þegar græni risinn Shrek kemst að því að fenjasvæðið hans er orðið yfirfullt af einhverjum ævintýrapersónum, sem hinn slóttugi Farquaad lávarður ber ábyrgð á, þá fer Shrek af stað með háværan asna sér við hlið til að sannfæra Farquaad lávörð um að láta sig fá fenin sín aftur. Farquaad, sem vill verða konungur, sendir Shrek til að bjarga Fiona prinsessu, sem bíður eftir hinum eina og sanna draumaprinsi í turni sínum, sem eldspúandi drekar vernda.
