Á ósnortinni eyju úti á hafi hafast við ófleygir fuglar. Fuglarnir eru hamingjusamir í paradís sinni og vita ekkert af umheiminum handan hafsins. Dagarnir eru áhyggjulausir og fuglarnir eyða þeim í að hugsa um eggin sín í rólegheitunum. Rauður, Toggi og Bombi, eru furðufuglarnir í hópnum. Rauður hefur verið skikkaður til að sækja skapofsameðferð þar sem hann á til að rjúka upp í skapinu, Toggi er ofvirkur, hreyfir sig hratt og er með sífellda munnræpu en Bombi þjáist af sjaldgæfum sjúkdómi sem veldur því að hann springur öðru hverju og verður því að búa í sprengjubyrgi.

Knútur er nýbúinn að bjarga erninum Margréti úr neti veiðimanna þegar veiðiþjófurinn Mörður handsamar þau bæði. Til allra hamingju er til alþjóðleg músasérsveit sem sérhæfir sig í að bjarga börnum. Og nú dugar ekkert minna en að kalla til aðalforingja Bjargvættanna, þau Benna og Birtu.
