He still had so much planned! Then the hitchhiker, who turns out to be an angel, explains to him that he is in an intermediate world and still has a chance to overturn his fate. But Paul keeps experiencing situations from his past. Will he manage to turn the catastrophe around in time and prevent the car accident?

Marga Engel, the likeable and self-confident cook, has built up a new life for herself with a lot of energy and love: she works as a cook and "financial manager" in a children's home, whose little residents have taken the shrewd woman very much to their hearts. In wartime Berlin, a factory foreman, Otto Quangel and his wife, Anna learn that their only son, Paul, has been killed in action in France. In their grief, the couple decide to take action against the Nazi regime. They create their own form of resistance, writing postcards urging people to resist Hitler and the Nazis and quietly distributing the postcards around Berlin. Various people enter the picture, showing the fear and distrust of the times. People, such as the actor Harteisen, find the cards and race to turn them in, lest they be found with them and come under suspicion. The police and the Gestapo are baffled for over a year, but finally find the source of the cards. The Volksgerichtshof sentences the Quangels to death.

Rolf, a sex-advice columnist and a lecher, has affairs with numerous women, but never a permanent relationship. Suzanne, one of his ex-lovers, offers to bet that no woman can get Rolf to propose marriage, a bet her girlfriend Andrea eagerly accepts. Enraged at the over-emotional, patriotic and sentimental way in which the Emperor's rescue at the hands of "the Hero of Solferino" is depicted, he lodges a complaint at the Imperial Court.
