Mandata a vivere con i Trotters, una famiglia ancora più strana di quanto lei stessa non sia, Gilly non ha alcuna intenzione di rimanere nella loro casa ma l'allegra e affettuosa Maime Trotter non si arrende di fronte alle sue resistenze e cerca di conquistarla. Il piano di fuga che Gilly elabora però non va a buon fine e lentamente la bambina comincia a guardare la nuova famiglia con occhi diversi.

Se Poppy si preoccupa per un bilancio familiare non certo faraonico, la generosissima Anna accetta di farsi carico anche di un'altra ragazzina e, più tardi, addirittura di un piccolo storpio. Ne nascono parecchie difficoltà, ma, col tempo, anche le gioie di una convivenza serena e felice. Più che la struttura della vicenda, abbastanza scontata nella sua marcia verso un esito di generale soddisfazione, vale la presenza di protagonisti di grosso mestiere che cavano il meglio da ogni situazione. Il film ha comunque dato origine, in Usa, a un fortunato "serial" televisivo.
