Siamo nel tardo Cretaceo, 65 milioni di anni fa. L'iguanodonte Aladar è stato separato dal branco quando era ancora un ovetto ed è stato allevato su un'isola da un clan di lemuri. Quando una devastante pioggia di meteoriti getta il suo mondo nel caos, Aladar, insieme alla sua famiglia adottiva, cerca rifugio sulla terraferma. Si unisce ad un gruppo di dinosauri in fuga verso un luogo sicuro. Avendo poco cibo e poca acqua e con la minaccia costante di predatori, il branco si mette in cammino e affronta pericoli di ogni genere. Il capobranco Kron impone ritmi faticosissimi, ed è disposto ad eliminare chi non riesce a tenere il passo. Aladar si sente in dovere di intervenire e, così facendo, si mette in urto con Kron. La sorella di Kron, Neera, è conquistata dalle capacità e dalla gentilezza di Aladar, e si mette dalla sua parte.
