Un contadino ucraino tornato dalla Prima Guerra Mondiale va a lavorare nell'arsenale di Kiev e prende parte allo sciopero popolare che nel 1918 sconvolse la città. Durante gli scontri contro i soldati viene mortalmente ferito ma, come invincibile, riesce a rialzarsi e a fronteggiare l'ufficiale che ordina la strage. È stato prodotto per commemorare l'insurrezione degli operai dell'arsenale di Kiev contro il governo nazionalista ucraino nel gennaio 1918.

Un agente britannico che lavora in Russia è costretto a rimanere più a lungo del previsto quando inizia la rivoluzione. Dopo essere stato rilasciato dalla prigione in Siberia, si finge un commissario russo. Grazie alla sua posizione tra i rivoluzionari, riesce a salvare una contessa russa dai bolscevichi.

Nella Russia del 1917 Natascia, attrice del Teatro di Kiev, riesce a far fuggire a prezzo della propria vita il generale Alexander (Emil Jannings) di cui è innamorata. Il generale assiste alla morte di lei e ne rimane profondamente scosso. Alcuni anni dopo Andreiev, ex direttore del Teatro, è a Hollywood per girare un film sulla fine della Russia zarista. Tra le comparse Andreiev riconosce il vecchio generale, ormai divenuto un barbone, e lo assume per fare il ruolo di se stesso

The action begins in 1912. But this durable and self-sufficient world with its unique way of life, habits and a special system of views and values is collapsing under the onslaught of bloody turmoil and revolution. Don is divided by hatred. The seemingly immutable age-old foundations of Don life - land, farm, family, military duty - are dissolving in the crucible of fratricidal war. The Melekhov, Korshunov, and Astakhov families are involved in the cycle of military and political events.
