Manciuria, confine tra Unione Sovietica e Cina, anno 1950. Un treno militare proveniente dalla Russia sovietica e carico di criminali di guerra accusati di aver collaborato con l'invasore giapponese durante la guerra fa il suo arrivo in un avamposto della Repubblica Popolare Cinese. Tra i prigionieri vi è Aisin Gioro Pu Yi, l'ultimo e ormai ex imperatore cinese: non si distingue per nulla dagli altri prigionieri, e i soldati lo trattano con la stessa durezza che riservano agli altri ostaggi. Facendo drammaticamente i conti con un avvenire nei panni di un carcerato senza importanza e prospettive, peraltro alla totale mercé di un feroce e onnipotente regime comunista, tenta il suicidio tagliandosi le vene e immergendole nell'acqua calda di uno squallido gabinetto. Mentre i guardiani tentano di sfondare la porta, intuendo il sospetto, la mente del moribondo inizia a rievocare la sua vita fin dal primo ricordo d'infanzia.
