Nel 1998 Ted (B. Stiller) non ha ancora dimenticato Mary (C. Diaz), la più bella del liceo a Rhode Island che nel 1985 l'aveva scelto come accompagnatore al ballo di fine anno. La ricerca, la trova a Miami, ma deve misurarsi con uno stuolo di suoi corteggiatori tra cui il più pericoloso è l'infido Pat (M. Dillon), l'investigatore da lui assoldato per rintracciarla.

Karl Childers ha trascorso la sua adolescenza e gran parte della sua età adulta in manicomio per aver ucciso da ragazzino la madre e l'amante di questa. Rilasciato dal manicomio, si trova a fare i conti con l'ostilità dei suoi concittadini. Ma l'amicizia con un bambino, divertito dal suo accento buffo, gli restuisce serenità e fiducia. Protagonista è Ester, che ha appena compiuto 45 anni e dedica la sua vita al prendersi cura del figlio David, quindicenne con una grave disabilità intellettiva. Ester lo ama profondamente, ma è esausta dalla routine e dal dover far fronte a tutto da sola. Un’amica di gioventù che vive in Italia la invita a farle visita, ma il comportamento imprevedibile di David crea imbarazzi, fino al punto che viene chiesto loro di dormire nel vecchio camper parcheggiato nel giardino. Per Ester questa è la goccia che fa traboccare il vaso. Quando cala la notte, accende il camper e parte. Inizia così un viaggio attraverso l’Italia, che li porterà nell’estremo Sud. Grazie agli incontri lungo il percorso, ed in particolare all’incontro con Zuza, una giovane trentenne che diventa il primo amore di David, Ester capisce che può essere più di una semplice madre e vivere una vita diversa.

After her boyfriend dies saving a child from being hit by a vehicle, Yuzu finds out that she is pregnant with his child. Despite her condition, she shows determination to be a mother and eventually has a daughter named Himawari. The show focuses on Yuzu and her family as Yuzu goes against the odds regarding her mental condition so she can be a good mother to Himawari.
