Ansa è single e vive a Helsinki. Lavora con un contratto a zero ore come scaffalista in un supermercato. Una notte incontra per caso l'altrettanto solitario lavoratore Holappa, con dei problemi d'alcolismo.

Nel primo episodio ("In Vespa") Nanni Moretti vaga per una Roma estiva e semideserta, va al cinema, raggiunge il Lido di Ostia fino al luogo in cui è stato ucciso Pasolini. Nel secondo ("Isole") partiamo da Lipari per arrivare a Filicudi in compagnia di Gerardo, teledipendente inconfessato. L'episodio finale ("Medici") segue invece l'odissea di Moretti a cui viene diagosticato un tumore al sistema linfatico. Dei tre episodi il migliore è il primo, tutto carrellate e riprese dal basso in mezzo ai palazzi romani. Ma funziona bene anche il terzo, così asciutto e privo di retorica, per di più su una materia autobiografica in cui sarebbe stato facile perdere la misura.

Cosa succede se un potentissimo boss mafioso sta per morire e vuole lasciare il comando della sua spietatissima cosca a un figlio che non ha mai riconosciuto? Ma, soprattutto, cosa succede se quel figlio è un innocuo, ingenuo e goffo ragazzotto di 35 anni che fa il chierichetto e che è vissuto in un orfanatrofio di un paesino del Sud Italia?

Film di famiglia e diario intimo, l'8° lungometraggio di N. Moretti comincia il 28 marzo 1994 (vittoria elettorale della destra berlusconiana), termina nell'agosto 1997 quando l'autore decide di tornare al cinema di finzione con un musical, e fa perno sul 18 aprile 1996 quando gli nasce il figlio Pietro, mentre, vinte le elezioni, il centrosinistra dell'Ulivo va al governo. È un film che dice e riferisce molto, insegna moltissimo, suggerisce poco, non racconta quasi mai. A differenza di Caro diario, il mix di privato e pubblico non è riuscito.
