Reed Richards e Victor von Doom sono due giovani studenti universitari di fisica che lavorano assieme ad un acceleratore di particelle, sfruttano l'opportunità di una cometa di passaggio per provare un esperimento; tuttavia, l'esperimento va storto, lasciando Victor orribilmente segnato, che viene creduto morto.
