Questo thriller di fantascienza racconta la storia di un'adolescente (Clara Rugaard), la prima di una generazione di esseri umani cresciuti da una "Madre" robot (Rose Byrne) progettata per ripopolare il pianeta in seguito all'estinzione della razza umana. L'insolito legame tra le due viene minacciato dall'arrivo di un'estranea ferita (Hilary Swank), le cui conoscenze mettono in dubbio le intenzioni della "Madre" e tutto ciò che la "Figlia" ha imparato sul mondo esterno.

Dopo anni di lavoro, alcuni scienziati inventano il robot Proteus IV, un robot estremamente sofisticato e in grado di autoprogrammarsi. Proteus inoltre dimostra atteggiamenti umani, e sembra ossessionato dalla procreazione, tanto che a farne le spese è la giovane Susan, un'assistente del laboratorio. Dopo che Proteus verrà disattivato, la ragazza si scoprirà incinta.

Nella tarda serata del 4 luglio 1978 (è la Festa della Indipendenza degli Stati Uniti), il dodicenne David Freman attraversa un bosco per andare incontro al fratellino. Scivola in una buca e poi, dopo qualche momento di stordimento, se ne torna a casa. Ma la sua casa gli appare diversa ed è abitata da una sconosciuta coppia anziana. Allarmatissimo nel constatare la scomparsa dei genitori e del piccolo Jeff, David apprende dalla Polizia che dagli archivi lui risulta morto, o comunque scomparso, da ben otto anni.

Rimasto vedovo di Becca da quattro anni, Karsh ha faticosamente trovato il modo di elaborare il lutto, benché in maniera peculiare. Grazie ai suoi ingenti mezzi finanziari ha fondato una società, GraveTech, che fabbrica sudari speciali, che permettono di riprendere con videocamere i defunti e di farli osservare post mortem ai congiunti attraverso un dispositivo elettronico. Soprattutto Karsh può così osservare Becca in ogni momento, anche da morta. Così facendo, scopre un'anomalia nelle ossa di Becca, come se queste stessero mutando sottoterra. Nel frattempo il cimitero GraveTech dove è sepolta Becca subisce un atto di vandalismo e di hacking informatico, apparentemente riconducibile a un gruppo di ecoterroristi islandesi. Maury, cognato di Karsh, e Terry, sua ex moglie e sorella di Becca, identica a lei tranne per carattere e acconciatura, pensano che siano coinvolti servizi segreti russi e cinesi, interessati alle potenzialità strategiche offerte dai sistemi GraveTech.

Non accade mai nulla di straordinario nella vita di Carol Peters (McCarthy) e così, quando il suo televisore, telefono e microonde iniziano a parlarle in modo insolente, la ragazza crede di essere su scherzi a parte. Oppure sta perdendo la testa. In realtà, il caso vuole che la prima superintelligenza artificiale al mondo abbia scelto lei come oggetto di studio, con l’idea di prendere possesso della sua vita… ma con un piano ben più grande di quanto lei possa mai immaginare…

Team Knight Rider is a syndicated television series that was adapted from the Knight Rider franchise and ran between 1997 and 1998. TKR was created by writer/producers Rick Copp and David A. Goodman, based on the original series created by Glen A. Larson, who was an executive producer.
