Siamo nel tardo Cretaceo, 65 milioni di anni fa. L'iguanodonte Aladar è stato separato dal branco quando era ancora un ovetto ed è stato allevato su un'isola da un clan di lemuri. Patchi è un cucciolo di dinosauro erbivoro, gracile e pacifico, suo padre è il capo del branco e il suo fratello maggiore e spaccone è predestinato a seguirne le orme. I due si ritroveranno però ben presto orfani in una foresta incendiata attraversata durante la migrazione.
