In tarda notte, una limousine percorre Mulholland Drive (una strada che attraversa le colline attorno a Los Angeles, California); al suo interno c'è una donna dai capelli scuri (interpretata da Laura Elena Harring) e due uomini; improvvisamente, l'auto si ferma ed uno dei due uomini punta una pistola contro la donna; subito dopo, però, dei pirati della strada si schiantano contro la limousine. La donna resta miracolosamente illesa, ma ha un'amnesia. Abbandona la scena dell'incidente e scende la collina che porta a Los Angeles, stendendosi nel giardino di un appartamento e mettendosi a dormire. Il giorno successivo, si sveglia e vede la proprietaria dell'appartamento, una donna di mezza età dai capelli rossi, che sta per partire.

Prima di uscire per una serata di festa e casino, un adolescente passa a trovare il suo spacciatore per testare un nuova droga. Dopodiché, sulla strada per raggiungere gli amici, soccorre una donna ferita e la sua nottata prende una piega surreale.

Quando danza per distrarre i clienti invece Baby Doll immagina la propria strada verso la libertà come un'iperbolica battaglia tecnologica tra katane, armi automatiche e nemici mostruosi.

Il paese di Pepelandia (Pepperland) è una terra paradisiaca e meravigliosa che si trova in fondo all'oceano. Lì regnano la musica, i colori, i fiori, l'allegria e, soprattutto, l'amore. Ma si scatena l'orda dei Biechi Blu che pietrificano tutti gli abitanti e opprimono Pepelandia con la forza delle armi, rendendo il paese grigio, silenzioso e triste. L'unico che si salva è il Giovane Fred che, sfuggito ai Biechi Blu, prende il suo sommergibile giallo e va a Liverpool dove incontra i Beatles e chiede loro aiuto perché liberino Pepelandia dalla tristezza. Dal porto di Liverpool incomincia per i Fab Four una incredibile avventura tra terre e isole lunari e psichedeliche e strane creature, attraversando ben 6 mari (il Mare del Tempo, il Mare della Scienza, il Mare dei Mostri, il Mare del Niente, il Mare delle Teste e il Mare dei Buchi).

Esperienze decisamente fuori dall'ordinario per Paul Hackett, introverso e ordinatissimo tecnico di computer, capitato per caso nel quartiere newyorkese di Soho. Scorsese torna agli inferni urbani di Mean Streets e di Taxi Driver, ma con meno astio e più ironia. È l'avventura, quasi hitchcockiana e un po' kafkiana, di un personaggio catapultato in un mondo non suo. Tutto da godere. Una delle grandi commedie nere degli anni '80.
