Dice il regista: "Il protagonista è un uomo sui quarant'anni che si sforza di fare un bilancio della vita precedente... Sullo schermo vanno avanti di pari passo tre storie: la prima è costituita dai ricordi dell'infanzia; la seconda è composta delle cronache di avvenimenti storici vissuti e compresi sotto un'angolazione prettamente individuale; la terza è formata da ragionamenti psicologici che sono un po' la sintesi di tutto il discorso". Un film affascinante, anche se di non facile lettura.
