Una volta ogni generazione, c'è un torneo di arti marziali interdimensionale indetto dagli Dei Anziani, conosciuto come Mortal Kombat. Se il regno di Outworld vince Mortal Kombat dieci volte consecutive, il suo imperatore, Shao Kahn, sarà in grado di invadere e conquistare l'Earthrealm (la Terra). L'Outworld ha già vinto nove tornei, quindi questo sarà il torneo decisivo.

Gabriel Yulaw vive in un futuro in cui si è coscienti della struttura dell'universo, in realtà un "multiverso" composto da ben 124 dimensioni parallele, tra le quali è possibile muoversi solo sotto il controllo di uno speciale corpo di polizia. Ogni essere vivente ha un doppio in ognuna di queste dimensioni e ogni volta che uno di essi muore, la sua energia confluisce nei corpi degli altri. Yulaw vuole acquistare poteri quasi illimitati e per questo uccide tutti i suoi doppi, ma l'ultima copia di sé ancora in vita si rivela quasi invincibile. Effetti speciali che ricordano Matrix e incredibili combattimenti a colpi di Kung Fu per un film sicuramente spettacolare.

I cattivi di Outworld, dopo aver perso nel primo "Mortal" il duello coi terrestri, tornano alla carica per l'nvasione del mondo.

Freddy Krueger, agendo nei sogni, ha massacrato tutti giovani di Springwood, tranne uno, John Doe, perchè gli serve per ritrovare il suo unico figlio dalla identità misteriosa. Contro Krueger si battono però due psicologi che suggeriranno il modo per liberarsi una volta per tutte della terribile creatura.

Heather, che nel 1984 aveva recitato da protagonista al primo Nightmare diretto da Wes Craven, ora è un'attrice felicemente sposata ed ha un bambino, Dylan. Ultimamente Heather è preoccupata perché qualcuno le telefona spesso a casa e lei è convinta che sia Freddy Krueger, il maniaco omicida che aveva fronteggiato nel film di cui era stata protagonista. Anche per il creatore dell'Uomo Nero, Wes Craven che è anche regista del film, le notti sono piene di incubi. La spiegazione è alquanto razionale: una malefica antica entità minaccia ferocemente tutti coloro che in passato hanno aderito alla realizzazione della serie.

La pellicola comincia nel 1945 a Las Vegas. Frank Harris (Brad Pitt) torna da sua madre e la invita a fare un giro sulla sua nuova motocicletta, ma, coinvolti in un incidente, la madre muore. Con un grido di dolore viene trasportato dallo scienziato-cartoon dottor Mustacchi (grazie ad uno "spillo" che conferisce straordinari poteri) in un'altra dimensione, completamente animata chiamata “Mondo Furbo”( "Cool World" in lingua originale). Nel 1992 il vignettista Jack Deebs (Gabriel Byrne) sta scontando in carcere una condanna per l'assassinio dell'uomo che ha trovato a letto con la propria moglie. Durante la sua pena detentiva, ha visioni del Mondo Furbo e della sexy, Holli (Kim Basinger). Jack passa il tempo generando una serie di fumetti basata sulle sue visioni del Mondo Furbo. Subito dopo la scarcerazione dalla prigione torna a casa sua a Las Vegas, dove Jack viene trasportato nel Mondo Furbo da Holli.

Phineas, Ferb e il loro ornitorinco domestico Perry decidono di seguire il Dr. Doofenshmirtz attraverso il suo "altrodimensionatonator": si ritrovano così in un universo parallelo dove una versione più malvagia del dottore domina il mondo attraverso un esercito di robot dai pugni di ferro...
