19世紀、ニューヨーク。貧しい生まれのバーナムは上流家庭の令嬢チャリティを妻に迎えたが失業し、大衆向けの博物館を開業。しかし客は集まらず、バーナムはユニークな人々を博物館に集め、歌あり踊りありで空中ぶらんこや動物の曲芸も見せるショーを売りにするとたちまち大成功。さらにバーナムは社会に認められたいという野心のため、ヨーロッパの女性歌手リンドを米国に招くが、家族やショーの出演者たちと心がすれ違いだす。

舞台は19世紀のパリ、オペラ座(ガルニエ宮)。迷路のように張めぐらされる地下に、人々が “ファントム” と呼ぶ謎の男が住みついている。支配人はファントムの為に特等席を用意しているが、誰もその姿を見た者はいない。ファントムは母親からも疎まれるほど醜い骸骨のような顔で生まれつき、その顔を仮面で隠し、誰にも知られることなくオペラ座の地下で孤独に生き抜いてきた。姿は醜いが繊細な心と音楽の才能に恵まれたファントムは、劇場の若手オペラ歌手クリスティーヌの若さと美貌、そしてなによりその歌声に魅了され、歌の手ほどきをするようになる。クリスティーヌは声だけのファントムの存在に恐れを抱きながらも、ファントムの “天使の歌声” に魅了される。ファントムはクリスティーヌを愛していて、自分も愛されたいと強く願い、クリスティーヌを地下にさらう。しかしクリスティーヌには幼馴染の貴族ラウルの存在があった。

The two of them eventually encounter Kara, a legendary leech who lives like an empty shell solely for the purpose of revenge.

Creator Ron Koslow's updated version of the fairy tale has a double focus: the relationship between Vincent, a mythic, noble man-beast, and Catherine, a savvy Assistant District Attorney in New York; and a secret Utopian community of social outcasts living in a subterranean sanctuary. Through an empathetic bond, Vincent senses Catherine's emotions, and becomes her guardian.
