1982年の南極。ノルウェー隊のヘリが、1匹の犬を追ってアメリカ南極観測隊第4基地へ現れた。銃や手榴弾を使い執拗に犬を狙うが失敗し、手違いからヘリは爆発。一人生き残ったノルウェー隊員は基地内へ逃げた犬を追って銃撃を続け、基地の隊員を負傷させるが基地の隊長により射殺される。ノルウェー基地へ向かったヘリ操縦士のマクレディらが見つけたものは、自殺し凍りついた隊員の死体、何かを取り出したと思しき氷塊、そして異様に変形し固まったおぞましい焼死体だった。一行は調査のため、記録フィルムと焼死体を持ち帰る。
南極にある皇帝ペンギンの国“エンペラー帝国”。彼らにとって何より大事なことは、自分だけの“心の歌”を見つけること。ところがマンブルは筋金入りの音痴で、小学校では幼なじみのグローリアが美声を披露するのとは対照的に調子外れな音程で大非難を浴びる始末。その代わり生まれつきタップダンスが得意なマンブルは、アデリー・ペンギンの５人組“アミーゴス”に踊りを絶賛され意気投合。しかし、そのダンスが帝国に災いをもたらすと判断した長老の命令でマンブルは追放の身に。さらに、ペンギンの食糧となる魚を乱獲する人間たちを説得しに向かった彼は、挙句に捕らえられてしまう。

50億年前、巨大隕石が地球に衝突した結果、地球は23．5度傾き、それが世界各地に四季を生み出すことになった。カメラはまず北極で、地球温暖化の影響と苦闘するホッキョクグマの母子を捉える。彼らは海に氷が張った冬の間に狩りを終えなければならないが、温暖化で氷が解けるようになったせいで狩りは困難に。続いてカメラは南下し、熱帯雨林の動物たち、アフリカゾウ、ザトウクジラ、アムールヒョウらの生態を見つめていく。
1958年、南極。日本の第1次越冬隊員たちは、第2次隊員と交代すべく昭和基地を後にした。だが悪天候が続き、ついに第2次隊員たちは上陸を断念、越冬の中止が決定される。樺太犬の世話係を務めていた潮田と越智は、その知らせを聞いて驚愕する。基地には15頭の犬が残されているのだ。だがもはや連れ戻す余裕はなく、2人は断腸の思いで南極を後にする。帰国した潮田は、犬の飼い主たちへの謝罪の旅を始める。

地球の6千倍もの質量を持つ恒星が発見された。土星探査船・隼によって、その恒星・ゴラスの軌道は地球を目指していることが判明する。地球上の爆発物ではゴラスを粉砕出来ないことを知った国連は、地球その物をロケットに変え、公転軌道上からの離脱を決意する。各国の科学技術者は総力を結集、南極に巨大なロケット噴射口を建造するが……。

The Last Place on Earth is a 1985 Central Television seven part serial, written by Trevor Griffiths based on the book Scott and Amundsen by Roland Huntford. The book is an exploration of the expeditions of Captain Robert F. Scott and his Norwegian rival in polar exploration, Roald Amundsen in their attempts to reach the South Pole. The series ran for seven episodes and starred a wide range of UK and Norwegian character actors as well as featuring some famous names, such as Max von Sydow, Richard Wilson, Sylvester McCoy and Pat Roach. It also featured performances early in their careers by Bill Nighy and Hugh Grant. Subsequently Huntford's book was republished under the same name. The book put forth the point of view that Amundsen's success in reaching the South Pole was abetted by much superior planning, whereas errors by Scott ultimately resulted in the death of him and his companions.

The Japanese 38th South Pole research expedition team are at the Dome base. Located 1,000 km away from the main Showa base at an altitude of 3,800 m, it is called the most inhospitable place on earth with an average temperature of -54 deg Celsius. However, they are common men who have to live together in the confined space of the Dome base for one year.
