ユダヤ人の大量虐殺が行われていた第二次世界大戦中の1941年。ベラルーシに住むユダヤ人の３兄弟、トゥヴィア、ズシュ、アザエル（は子どものころからの遊び場だった森に逃げ込む。だが、彼らの思惑とは裏腹に、逃げ惑うユダヤ人たちが次々と森に集まり始める。

第二次世界大戦中のユーゴスラビアでは、強大なドイツ軍が、パルチザン将兵をネレトバ峡谷に追いつめていた。彼らを救うため、アメリカ軍特殊部隊“フォース10”がネレトバ橋の爆破を命じられる。フォース10には、ナバロン要塞を爆破したマロリーとミラーが加えられた。しかしユーゴスラビアに降下した彼らは、ドラザック大尉率いる王党派に捕えられ、ドイツ軍に引き渡されてしまう。

1941年の冬。ソ連に侵攻したドイツ軍兵士の間で、ある噂が広がっていた。それは謎のソ連狙撃兵が、ドイツ兵を次々と射殺しているらしい、というものだった。ドイツ兵はその正体不明の死神を《赤い亡霊》と呼び、いつ狙撃されるか分からない恐怖に怯えるようになっていた……。その頃、部隊とはぐれてしまった5人のソ連兵たちは誰もいない寒村にたどり着き休息を取ろうとしたところ、ブラウン大尉率いるドイツ軍部隊が村に現れる。敵に捕まってしまった味方を救出するため、５人は戦闘を決意。激戦を繰り広げるが、多勢に無勢で全滅の危機に陥る。その時、どこからともなく飛来した銃弾が、次々とドイツ兵を倒してゆく。それは謎のスナイパー、《赤い亡霊》が放ったものだった……。

"The Written Off" is a famous Serbian TV miniseries, that was very popular in former Yugoslavia, originally airing in 1974. Due to its popularity, Radio Television of Serbia has shown reruns of the series ten times, the last re-run starting in 2012. The series has achieved something of a cult status among its audience and still attracts an estimated 3 million viewers with its last rerun. Idea of series derives from exploits of freedom fighters in Belgrade during World War II, and all the characters and events are fictitious.

Five young German friends promise to meet again after WW2 ends, but soon their naive wishes of peace and happiness will become a long and tragic nightmare.

In October 1943, Red Army Major Toporkov, after escaping a concentration camp, informs a partisan detachment about a planned uprising in the camp and the need for weapons. The commander sends two convoys: one with real weapons and another with fake ones to mislead the Germans, aware of a traitor in their ranks. The convoys navigate through Polesie, thickets, and swamps, pursued by German forces, with no return.
