1970年代後半、ニューヨークで公然とセックスを楽しめるナイトクラブをオープンさせた男の生き様と、スワッピング文化の栄華と衰退を描いたドキュメンタリー。製作・監督はTVドキュメンタリーなどを手掛けてきたマシュー・カウフマンと、ジャーナリストのジョン・ハート。1977年、不況や治安の悪化によりニューヨークはどん底状態にあった。しかし、市が財政崩壊の危機に直面している中、夜の世界を彩るナイトクラブは空前の盛り上がりを見せていた。ミッドタウンのディスコ“スタジオ54”には、コカインでハイになったセレブが集まり、ダウンタウンのライヴハウス“CBGB”には、社会に対する不満や怒りをぶちまけるパンクロッカーたちが、そして保守的なアッパー・ウエスト・サイドの芸術的建造物“アンソニア”の地下にあるナイトクラブ“プレイトーズ・リトリート（プラトンの隠れ家）”には、ごく普通のカップルたちが集い、ダンスフロアーで踊り、プールで泳ぎ、見知らぬ相手とのフリーセックスを楽しんでいた。オーナーであるラリー・レビンソン独自の発想から火がついた“プレイトーズ・リトリート”は、個人的な快楽を求める自己中心的な世代に支持され、公然とセックスを楽しめる場所として急速にその名が知れ渡っていく。階層に縛られることなくどんな人でも歓迎し、カップルたちはたったの35ドルで、この“裸の楽園”に足を踏み入れることができた。ラリーやそこに集う者たちにとって“プレイトーズ・リトリート”はユートピアだった。中には、「タイムマシーンのように忘却の彼方へ連れ去ってくれる場所だった」と言う者もいる。しかし1985年、恒例のニューイヤー・パーティ直前、市当局から閉鎖処分とされた“プレイトーズ・リトリート”は、その8年に及ぶ華やかな幕を閉じることになる……。

古代ローマの浴場設計技師ルシウス・モデストゥスは、ローマの公衆浴場から21世紀の日本の銭湯に突然タイムスリップしてしまう。以後、古代ローマと現代日本の浴場を何度も往復し、その都度数々の設備や工夫を目の当たりにすることになる。 一方、漫画家志望の若い日本人女性である山越真実は、ルシウスが現代日本に出現するたびに彼に接触することになり大いに興味を引かれる。

In 1971, a scientific expedition in Latin America had uncovered an ancient artifact containing the remains of the demon Giff, leading to the creation of the Vistamps. The story is a comedy about Lucius, an architect of public bath houses in ancient Rome, who time-travels to various modern-day baths in Japan. The author explores the two cultures in the world "that have loved baths the most: the Japanese and the Romans."
