ボンドは中南米某国のトロ将軍に変装し、将軍が管理する高性能偵察機を破壊すべく侵入する。本物の将軍に見つかり一旦は拘束されるが、CIA女性アシスタントのビアンカの誘惑で敵兵を惑した隙に超小型ジェット機（通称：アクロスター）で逃走。地対空ミサイルに追尾されるものの、前述の偵察機の格納庫内をすり抜けた直後にミサイルが格納庫を直撃、結果的に任務に成功する。 その頃、東ベルリンでピエロに成りすましサーカス団に潜入していた009は『レディーの卵（ファベルジュの卵）』（ロシア皇帝献上品）を持ち出したのを見つかり、投擲ナイフを特技とする双子の兄弟ミーシカとグリーシカにやられ、ベルリン英国大使館公邸に『卵』を持ち込み死亡する。

第四次中東戦争の最中、イスラエル空軍に所属する1機のA-4が戦術核爆弾を搭載して基地を離陸するが、飛行中にアラブ連合軍の2K12地対空ミサイルによって撃墜される。パイロットは死亡し、機体も空中で大破するが、搭載されていた戦術核は原形を留めたまま砂漠の砂中に埋もれてゆく。 それから月日は流れ、ロシアで前大統領が急死しチェチェン紛争に関して強硬姿勢も辞さない新大統領ネメロフが就任し、米ロ両国の緊迫した関係を改善するため米国はCIAの長官キャボットとその補佐のジャック・ライアンをロシアに派遣する。しかし、両国の間で生じた相互の不信はぬぐえず、これを利用したネオナチやKKKを中心とした勢力が戦争を起こそうと策動を始めた。

1945年8月30日、GHQ最高司令官ダグラス・マッカーサーが日本に上陸し、アメリカによる本格的な日本統治が始まる。マッカーサーは戦争犯罪人の一斉検挙とその戦争犯罪を裁くため、活動を開始する。折からアメリカ本国では、天皇の訴追を求める声が政府にも国民世論にも多数を占めていた。その一方、極東における「反共の防波堤」建設を重要視し、また後年の政界進出、大統領選出馬をにらむマッカーサーにとっては、日本の戦後統治で成功を収めることが是が非でも必要あり、その観点から天皇を逮捕処刑することによる日本国民の反発を避けたいと彼は考えていた。マッカーサーは日本の開戦、真珠湾攻撃の意志決定に天皇の関与が決定的影響を及ぼしたのか否か、部下に調査を命じる。
