ニューヨーク・シティ・バレエ団に所属するバレリーナ、ニナは、踊りは完ぺきで優等生のような女性。芸術監督のトーマスは、花形のベスを降板させ、新しい振り付けで新シーズンの「白鳥の湖」公演を行うことを決定する。そしてニナが次のプリマ・バレリーナに抜てきされるが、気品あふれる白鳥は心配ないものの、狡猾で官能的な黒鳥を演じることに不安があり……。
