1945年4月、第二次世界大戦下。ナチス占領下のドイツに侵攻を進める連合軍の中にウォーダディーと呼ばれる米兵がいた。長年の戦場での経験を持ち、戦車部隊のリーダー格存在である彼は、自身が“フューリー”と名付けたシャーマンM4中戦車に3人の兵士と共に乗っていた。ある日、ウォーダディーの部隊に新兵のノーマンが副操縦手として配属される。だが彼はこれまで戦場を経験したことがなく、銃を撃つこともできない兵士であった。

1930年代の上海は、新興の暴力組織、斧頭会が牛耳っていた。猪籠城寨（豚小屋砦）と呼ばれる貧困者アパートにチンピラのシンとその相棒が斧頭会を名乗り恐喝に来た。住人を舐めていたが逆にボコボコにされ、苦し紛れに投げた爆竹で偶然通りかかった斧頭会幹部に怪我をさせてしまう。

Ａ・タルコフスキーの作品は様々な映像の断片がコラージュされたようなものばかりである。この「鏡」もまたそうであり、彼の自伝的要素を持つというが、解るような解らないような……。でもその数々の映像はどれもこれもかっこ良く、戦争の記録フィルムらしきものも出てくる。物語などの存在は忘れてただひたすら映像の中で泳ぐような感覚で、なんとも美しい一本だ。

物語の舞台は、第2次世界大戦下の日本。主人公は入院中の母を火事で亡くし、父親の再婚に伴って東京から田舎へ移り住んだ少年・牧眞人（まきまひと）だ。父親の再婚相手は、死んだ母とそっくりな母の妹だった。一風変わった7人の老婆が仕える屋敷に住み始めた眞人。その屋敷の近くには、かつて物語が好きな大おじが建て、忽然と姿を消したという廃墟同然の塔があった。眞人は人の言葉をしゃべるアオサギに導かれ、不思議な世界へと冒険に出る。
